The Boat

Pioneer Boats builds a boat that satisfies the needs for the Fishing Cook. You look for many requirements when shopping for a boat and the Pioneer 197 offers them all. Speed (if needed), dry ride in a beam sea and a comfortable ride offshore. Although marketed as a 19ft boat, its just shy of 20ft which helps offshore. The 197 offers all of the above and more. We will be posting a video sea trial in the near future.

I've equipped our boat with the latest electronic for navigation and fish finding. The navigation heart it the Garmin 3010C Network GPS Combo. The GPS is WAAS enable for more accuracy and with the BlueChart®  electronic marine charts, it feels like were moving on a NOAA chart. Also used is the bathymetric BlueChart® that gives us a contour view of the ocean floor from the offshore canyons from Hatteras Canyon to the Eleuthera Islands in the Bahamas west to the Dry Tortugas. The network is strengthened with the GDL™ 30A weather data receiver that downloads real-time data from XM WX Satellite Weather service. We have Current conditions, City forecasts,  NEXRAD Radar with precipitation type (animated, high resolution), Surface air pressure, Surface analysis (Highs, Lows and fronts), Lightning Stlikes, Storm cell size (speed and direction), Hurricane track, Visibility forecast, Wind speed, Sea surface temperature, Wind direction, Wave period, Wave direction, Wave height & Buoy data that helps with weather monitoring and planning. The GDL™ 30A receiver also gives us XM Satellite Radio for offshore listening pleasure; CNN, ESPN, ACC Sports, ect.
The ocean depths are monitored with the GSD 20 remote, black-box sounder that transmits 500 watts at 50/200kHz. The water surface temperature is also monitored with the GSD 20.
We're kept on hands free course with the Raymarine S1000 Autopilot and it too is linked into the GPS System. Most of the electronics are flush mounted in the overhead radio box in the T-Top.
We fish with Taco Outriggers and Penn International Reels that offer an ease and comfort that all fisherman should have. For the days when the sea and the wind are working against you, we have the T Top spray shield and side curtains that protect us from the elements. A swim platform, dual batteries/switch and a wash down pump round out the options on board.
