Menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus

The menhaden grow to about a foot in length. They are a very oily fish and can be found by an oil slick when large schools have formed. The feed on plankton and can only be caught by netting. They cannot be caught with the use of bait and hooks.

When seen rolling and popping on the surface, the Menhaden are slurping surface food. They are intolerant to low oxygen water and will not survive in poorly aerated live wells; but in the right captive environments they are deadly baits for fishing.

For slow trolling and live bait fishing, the bait should be hooked through the nose. For bottom fishing scenarios, hook the fish through the nose or just in behind the dorsal fin and in front of the anal fin. They are also great as chum and chunking bait.
