  Longbill Spearfish Tetrapturus pfluegeri

Longbill Spearfish (Atlantic Spearfish) Range(Atlantic Ocean)

The Longbill Spearfish has a dark-blue back, shading to a silvery-white underneath and the bill is longer than it’s head. There are two dorsal fins as the front dorsal is long and forms a peak at the front. There are two anal fins and the anus is in front of the first fin by the length of the fin. The pectoral fins are long and wide and there is a very distinctive lateral line. The maximum weight is around ninety pounds.

The Longbill Spearfish, aka Atlantic Spearfish, prefers the deep ocean currents in the temperature range between 70oF to 86oF. Being pelagic, these fish follow the ocean’s rivers, known as currents, over drop offs and ledges in search of small fish and squid.

Not much is known about spearfish but they are taken on squid and small baitfish. Trolling ballyhoo, mullet and squid is a good choice along with softheaded lures and hard lures. The spearfish mature around two years old and rarely live past the age of four or five.
