The
Blackfin Tuna is a fast and aggressive fighter that roams
the ocean currents of 60oF to 86oF.
They are located around reefs, wrecks and banks of the
Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.
The
upper body is dark blue turning to a silvery white in the
lower body. The finlets are dark with a tinge of yellow.
During April to November the Blackfin spawns off the east
coast of Florida. They can be found in the temperate waters
from Cape Cod to Brazil and the Gulf of Mexico.
Trolling plugs, lures, “Jap” feathers and soft plastic squid
are good artificial lures. Natural baits include squid,
ballyhoo,
mullet and strip baits with and attractor: Sea Whitch, skirts, Island Lures, etc. A good trolling method is
to combine natural and artificial lures in the spread. The
use flies is a good challenge when you encounter a feeding
school. Type of flies includes the Clouser and the Deceivers
and flies with a great flash. Casting spoons at the edge of
a feeding school is a good and fun choice.
The
art of chumming and chunking works very well. Once a chum
line is established, it is good to fuel the line with a
handful of live bait every now and then. When feeding
begins, toss a hooked live bait or chunk into the line and
let it fall naturally with the chum. Also, this is a good
tile to cast flies and spoons. |
