Wahoo

Acanthocybium solandri

Wahoo are found though out the world’s tropical waters. They are also considered one of the fastest of the pelagic game fish with speeds around 60 miles per hour. They are found around the 180-line out to the deep drop-offs. They are also found in the Gulf Stream and the edges of deep banks and seamounts.

Wahoo feed on small baitfish, flying fish, mackerel, small tuna, ballyhoo and they also like squid. The most popular bait used is a ballyhoo, mullet or strip bait behind a bright bullet type lure or skirt. This is usually fished off of a downrigger to take the bait down to the fish.

The Cairn Swimmer and the Marauder are specially designed artificial lure for Wahoo. All lures and baits should be trolled at double speed if specifically targeting the ‘Hoo. Most are caught as bi-catch to Tuna or Marlin; not a bad bi-catch. They’re delicious.
