White Marlin

Tetrapturus albidus

The White Marlin is an Atlantic billfish and is considered to be one of the greatest light tackle fish. It will tear through a trolling spread and begin a "grey-hounding" leap extravaganza.

Trolling is the usual fishing method. The white seldom exceeds 100 pounds making it a great 20-pound light tackle test. Being a blue water fish, the white feeds throughout the water column. This is evident by its meals of squid and eels in many fish. They also feed on ballyhoo, flying fish and other small baitfish.

Using live eels with a small colored skirt, pink, green or blue, is often over looked. Whites love eels. Live Ballyhoo, small Mullet and Flying Fish are also a wonderful choice. 30 pound trolling outfits are perfect for the whites but 50-pound tackle is usually used in case tuna deicide to have a bite to eat.

If you are adventurous and would like to try you hand at the bait-and-switch method, choose a fly rod between 12 and 15 wt with a billfish class fly reel and hold on.
